So, you’ve finally accepted that your massive CD binder is basically a relic, right? Maybe you’ve got a stack of AOL free trial discs from 2002 that you just can’t bring yourself to toss, or perhaps your collection of early 2000s mix CDs is gathering dust. We’ve all been there.

Before you haul those shiny frisbees to the landfill, hear me out. I’ve been hoarding my old music collection for years, partly out of nostalgia and partly because throwing away music feels wrong. :/ Recently, I finally pulled them out of storage and went a little crazy with the glue gun. Honestly, I’m kicking myself for not doing this sooner.

Ready to turn your forgotten plastic into something actually cool? Here are 10 DIY old CD crafts that are way more fun than letting them collect dust.

1. The Reflective Mosaic Mirror

This was the first project I ever tried, and honestly, it looks way more expensive than it actually is. You’re basically just smashing up CDs and turning them into a custom mirror frame.

Breaking the CDs (Safely, Please!)

Okay, safety glasses aren’t just a suggestion here. Those shards get sharp. I learned this the hard way when I found a piece in my sock three days later. I like to put the CDs in a thick ziplock bag and go at them with a hammer. It’s surprisingly therapeutic. You want a mix of big pieces and tiny, confetti-like bits.

Arranging Your Design

Grab a plain mirror from a thrift store. Coat the frame with a strong adhesive—E6000 is my go-to because that stuff holds forever. Start placing your shards around the frame. Don’t overthink it! The random, chaotic look usually turns out the best because the light catches everything at different angles.

Once it’s dry, mix some dark grout and smear it over the whole thing. Wipe the excess off the tile pieces before it dries completely, and boom—you’ve got a disco-ball mirror that throws rainbows across your entire room.

2. DIY CD Weaving (Yes, You Read That Right)

Ever wondered why we stop playing with texture and yarn after kindergarten? This project brings it back. Weaving through the holes of a CD creates this cool, modern art piece that screams “I’m crafty and I have patience.”

Warping the Loom

Take an old CD and cut several slits around the disc—about an inch apart, going from the outer edge to about a half-inch from the center hole. Don’t cut all the way through; you need that center ring intact.

The Weaving Part

Tape the end of a colorful piece of yarn to the back. Now, start wrapping it around the disc, going through the slits. Go over, under, over, under. I prefer using chunky, textured yarn for this because it fills the space faster, but thin embroidery floss gives you a really intricate look.

You can hang these as ornaments or string a few together to make a funky garland. IMO, they make way better gifts than a candle.

3. Kitchen Sconces or Wall Art

This is where we get a little fancy. By heating CDs, you can mold them into bowls or curved shapes. I tried this to make a fruit bowl for my kitchen, and it turned out looking like a prop from a sci-fi movie—in a good way!

The Heat Trick

Hold a CD with a pair of tongs over a candle flame or a toaster oven set to low heat. Do this in a well-ventilated area because melting plastic doesn’t exactly smell like roses. The disc will get soft and floppy really fast.

Molding the Shape

Once it’s bendy, press it into a bowl mold (or just drape it over an upside-down cereal bowl). Let it cool for a minute, and it holds that shape permanently. Now you have a quirky catch-all for keys and change.

Pro tip: If you do a bunch of these and mount them on a board with LED lights behind them, you get this insane, futuristic wall art that looks like a dragon’s egg.

4. Garden Scarecrow (or Bird Deterrent)

Got a garden? Birds and squirrels eating your tomatoes? Old CDs are the perfect solution. I hung a string of these up last summer, and honestly, the look on that squirrel’s face was priceless.

How to Build It

Just string some fishing line through the center hole of a few CDs. Tie them to a stick or a piece of bamboo. Plant it right in the middle of your garden.

Why It Works

The sun catches the reflective surface and spins them around, creating flashes of light that freak birds out. It’s a chemical-free, eco-friendly way to protect your veggies. Plus, it looks kind of like weird, modern garden art. It’s a win-win.

5. Upcycled Coasters (The Easiest Project)

If you want instant gratification, this is it. You can make a set of coasters in about ten minutes, and they actually work really well. No more water rings on your coffee table!

Felt and Mod Podge

First, cut out a circle of felt or cork and glue it to the label side of the CD. This protects your furniture from scratches. Then, you can either leave the shiny side bare or get creative.

Decoupage Fun

I love using Mod Podge to glue on patterned paper, sheet music, or even old comic book pages to the playing side. Seal it with another layer of Mod Podge, let it dry, and you’ve got a set of coasters that actually start conversations. Way cheaper than the store-bought ones.

6. Animal Sculptures for the Yard

Take your garden art to the next level by cutting CDs into shapes. With a good pair of heavy-duty scissors (the kind you use for tin snips), you can cut CDs like cardboard. It takes some muscle, but it’s doable.

Making a CD Fish

I made a fish sculpture last spring. Cut one CD in half for the fins. Leave one whole for the body. Use a hot glue gun to attach the halves to the sides of the whole CD. Cut a small triangle from a scrap for the tail.

Painting and Placement

Spray paint the whole thing if you want a solid color, or leave them rainbow. Attach it to a stake, and stick it in a flower pot. It catches the light and looks like it’s swimming through your petunias.

7. Earring Holders That Actually Sparkle

I have a bad habit of losing earrings. They just vanish into the void of my bathroom drawer. This solved that problem instantly.

The Simple Stand

Take a piece of sturdy cardboard or a small picture frame. Glue a bunch of CDs side-by-side in a grid pattern, shiny side out.

Hang Your Bling

Now, you can literally just hang your earring hooks through the holes in the disc. The reflective backing makes your jewelry stand out, and it doubles as a funky piece of decor. Plus, you can see all your options at once instead of digging through a tangle of chains.

8. Clock Making (Time Flies When You’re Crafting)

Turning a CD into a clock is a rite of passage for DIYers, I swear. It’s functional, easy, and looks slick.

The Mechanism

You can buy a basic clock mechanism kit (with the hands and motor) at any craft store for a few bucks. They usually come with a little foam adhesive square to attach to the back of the CD.

Customizing the Face

Print out numbers on clear sticker paper, or just use vinyl decals. I made one with Roman numerals once, and it looked super classy. Drill a small hole in the exact center of the disc if the center hole isn’t big enough for the mechanism’s post. Pop the hands on, set the time, and you’ve got a functional timepiece.

9. Party Garlands and Streamers

Throwing a 90s theme party? Or just want to blind your guests with nostalgia? A CD garland is the way to go.

Stringing Them Up

Punch two holes on opposite sides of each CD near the edge (use a hot nail or a drill). String a long piece of ribbon or twine through the holes, alternating with beads or spacers if you’re feeling fancy.

The Effect

Hang them across a window or doorway. When the breeze hits them, they spin and clink together, throwing light all over the room. FYI, this makes for an incredible photo backdrop. Your Instagram is going to look lit.

10. Cat Toys (The Cheapest Entertainment Ever)

Okay, this one is barely a craft, but my cat, Luna, goes absolutely bonkers for it. It’s also the best way to use up the CDs that shattered in the bag when you got too aggressive with the hammer for Project #1.

Simple Light Play

Just hang a CD on a string from a doorknob. The slightest air current spins it, sending reflections darting across the walls and floor. My cat will chase those spots for hours. It’s the cheapest cat sitter I’ve ever found.

Safety First

Just make sure to hang it high enough that they can’t chew on it, or supervise playtime to avoid any sharp edges.

So, there you have it. Ten ways to rescue your old CDs from the trash and give them a second life. I’ve got a stack sitting on my craft table right now waiting to become coasters for my upcoming BBQ.

Got a favorite way to upcycle these shiny discs? Or a hilarious story about a craft gone wrong? I’d love to hear about it. Now, go dig through that closet and get to work! 🙂
