So, you’re staring at your walls again, thinking they look a little… sad. Or maybe your coffee table is sporting the same old pile of magazines from 2019. I get it. My place recently started giving off major “college dorm meets waiting room” vibes, and I knew I had to do something before I started charging my friends rent to sit on the boring couch.

The good news? You don’t need to drop your entire paycheck at a fancy home goods store to make your space feel like you. I’ve been on a major DIY kick lately, and I’ve rounded up 20 of my favorite decor crafts that are actually doable on a Tuesday night. No power tools or fine art degrees required. Just you, a little creativity, and maybe some hot glue (but seriously, when is hot glue not the answer?).

Wall Art & Gallery Goodness

Blank walls are basically a scream for attention. Let’s give them something interesting to look at.

1. The “Framed” Fabric Wall Art

Ever find a fabric pattern you absolutely love but have zero sewing skills? I’m right there with you. Here’s the cheat code: grab a few cheap canvas frames from the dollar store and some staple gun.

  • Simply stretch your fabric over the canvas like you’re making a bed.
  • Pull it tight, fold the edges like a present, and staple it down on the back.
  • Boom. Instant, custom “paintings” that cost a fraction of real art. I did this with some vintage-looking floral fabric for my bedroom, and it looks way more expensive than it was. 😉

2. Abstract Art with a Credit Card (Seriously)

You don’t need to be Picasso to make cool abstract art. All you need is a canvas, some acrylic paint, and an old gift card.

  • Squirt blobs of paint directly onto the canvas.
  • Use the edge of the credit card to scrape the paint across the surface in long, sweeping strokes.
  • The colors blend in this super organic, modern way. It’s impossible to mess up. IMO, this is the most fun you can have with a credit card without going into debt.

3. Botanical Pressing Art

Nature is basically a free decor store. Next time you’re on a walk, grab some interesting leaves or ferns.

  • Press them in a heavy book for a week or two until they’re flat and dry.
  • Then, arrange them in a simple frame with a white background. It gives off major “Etsy find” energy, but you literally just picked it up off the sidewalk. Ever wonder why we buy things we can get for free? Me neither. Let’s just enjoy the savings.

4. Geometric String Art

This isn’t your summer camp string art with hearts and loop-de-loops. We’re going modern.

  • Hammer small nails in a geometric shape (like a hexagon or just a random triangle) on a stained piece of wood.
  • Then, wrap thin black or gold string around the nails to create a cool, web-like effect.
  • It’s a great way to add texture and a little mid-century modern flair to your space.

Upcycled & Thrifted Treasures

One person’s trash is literally our new favorite side table. Thrift stores are a goldmine for DIY decor.

5. The “Gold Leaf” Anything

Found a sad, chipped vase or a tacky candle holder at the thrift store? Gold leaf (or the much cheaper gold foil/transfer leaf) is your best friend.

  • Paint your item with a special adhesive size (it comes in a kit).
  • Once it’s tacky, gently apply the gold leaf.
  • Brush away the excess to reveal a glamorous, slightly imperfect metallic finish. It instantly elevates the trashiest knick-knack into a chic decor piece.

6. Book Page Wreath

If you have old paperback books with yellowed pages (or that one cheesy romance novel you’d never admit to reading), this is for you.

  • Roll each page into a cone shape and glue the tip.
  • Create a bunch of these “paper roses.”
  • Hot glue them onto a foam or grapevine wreath form.
  • The final product is an incredibly literary and rustic piece. Hang it on your door or a mirror. It’s a great conversation starter.

7. Painter’s Tape Vases

Remember those clear glass vases that seem to multiply in your cabinets? Let’s zhush them up.

  • Wrap them in different widths of painter’s tape, washi tape, or even electrical tape.
  • You can do stripes, geometric patterns, or even just random, chaotic lines (that’s my personal style).
  • Pop in some dried eucalyptus or a single sunflower, and you’ve got a stunning centerpiece. The best part? If you get bored, just peel the tape off.

8. Dresser to Media Console

Got a small, beat-up dresser from a yard sale? Don’t you dare throw it out.

  • Give it a good sanding and a fresh coat of paint in a modern color (like a deep emerald green or a matte black).
  • Remove the top drawers entirely.
  • Place wicker baskets or stack books in the open spaces, and use the top for your TV.
  • It’s a custom-looking media console with built-in storage for basically the price of paint.

Lighting & Ambiance

Lighting is everything. It can turn a room from “sterile doctor’s office” to “cozy coffee shop” in a snap.

9. Marbled Clay Ring Holder (That Doubles as a Candle Holder)

Air-dry clay is a magical substance. Roll it out, cut it into a circle, and then press a tea light into the center to create an indent.

  • Before it dries, swirl in some different colored clays to create a marble effect.
  • Once dry, you can pop a tea light in there. It also works perfectly for holding rings and jewelry by your bedside. Multi-tasking decor? Yes, please.

10. DIY Concrete Planters

Hear me out—working with concrete is surprisingly satisfying. You can buy small bags of concrete mix at the hardware store.

  • Use plastic containers (like yogurt cups) as molds. Put a smaller cup inside a larger one, pour concrete in the gap, and weigh down the inner cup.
  • Once it cures (give it a day or two), peel away the plastic.
  • You’ll have these super sleek, industrial-style planters for a fraction of the store price. Just make sure you seal them if you’re putting a live plant in there!

11. Twinkle Light Curtain

String lights aren’t just for Christmas anymore. Take a plain white curtain and a set of battery-operated fairy lights.

  • Weave the lights through the fabric of the curtain.
  • Hang it in a corner or behind your bed.
  • At night, it creates the most magical, soft glow. It’s instant hygge, and you’ll wonder why you ever lived without it.

12. Wine Bottle Tiki Torches

Had a nice dinner party with some fancy wine? Don’t recycle those bottles yet.

  • Clean them out and soak off the labels.
  • Buy a set of simple tiki torch wicks and fuel (the kind that fit into the bottle neck).
  • Fill the bottle with citronella oil, screw on the wick, and you have chic, sustainable torches for your patio or garden.

Textiles & Soft Goods

Let’s get cozy and tackle some soft furnishings. These projects add warmth and color without taking up floor space.

13. Dip-Dye Curtains

Plain white curtains are boring. Fix that with a bucket of fabric dye.

  • Mix up your dye according to the package instructions.
  • Dip the bottom third of your curtains into the dye.
  • Hang them up to dry, and you have gorgeous, ombre custom curtains. I did this with a soft blush pink, and it makes my whole living room feel warmer.

14. The “No-Sew” Pillow Cover

Found a cool vintage scarf or a piece of fabric you love? Turn it into a pillow cover in 5 minutes.

  • Cut your fabric to size (leaving a few inches extra).
  • Lay the fabric pattern-side down, place your pillow insert in the center, and simply tie the four corners together on top in a tight knot.
  • Fluff the ends out. It looks intentional and boho-chic, and there’s not a single stitch involved.

15. Tassel Garland

Tassels are basically party decorations for adults. Grab some embroidery floss or thin yarn in your room’s accent colors.

  • Wrap the yarn around a small book or a piece of cardboard about 50 times.
  • Tie a string tightly around one end, and cut the loops at the other end.
  • Attach a bunch of these tassels to a long piece of twine.
  • Hang it on a bookshelf, a mantel, or along a wall for a fun, colorful pop. FYI, making tassels is weirdly addictive.

16. Painted Rug

If you have a cheap, natural fiber rug (like a jute or sisal one) that’s looking a little plain, grab some fabric paint and a stencil.

  • Use a heavy-duty stencil and a foam brush to pounce paint onto the rug.
  • You can do a border, a big central medallion, or just some scattered shapes.
  • It’s a super cheap way to get a custom rug that looks like it cost ten times as much.

Functional Decor & Shelf Styling

These are the little projects that tie a room together and keep your stuff organized (or at least make the mess look intentional).

17. Geometric Bookends

Bored of boring metal bookends? Make your own with some scrap wood.

  • Take two small, thick blocks of wood and paint or stain them.
  • Hammer three long nails into the top of each block, forming a triangle.
  • Your books slide between the nails, and the geometric shape adds a cool, sculptural element to your shelf.

18. Leather Cord Keeper

Tired of seeing a tangle of cables behind your desk? Grab some scrap leather (or faux leather) and a couple of brass screws.

  • Cut a strip of leather about an inch wide and six inches long.
  • Screw the ends to the underside of your desk, leaving a loop.
  • Feed your charging cables through the loop. It holds them neatly in place and ready to use, and it looks way cooler than a plastic clip.

19. Marbled Coasters

Remember that air-dry clay we used earlier? Let’s make some coasters.

  • Roll it out flat and cut it into squares or circles.
  • Use a toothpick to swirl drops of acrylic paint into the surface for that marbled look.
  • Once dry, seal them with a waterproof sealant (mod podge works in a pinch).
  • Now you can put your sweaty drink down without worrying about water rings. Win-win.

20. The “Perfect” Display Tray

Every coffee table needs a tray to wrangle the remote controls and candles.

  • Grab a plain wooden serving tray from a craft store.
  • Paint the bottom with chalkboard paint.
  • Once it’s dry, you can write little messages or draw designs on it with chalk. It’s a functional piece of decor that you can change with your mood. Feeling sassy? Draw a sarcastic smiley face on it. :/

Go Forth and Decorate!

So there you have it—20 ways to trick people into thinking you have your life (and your interior design) completely together. The best part about DIY decor isn’t just the money you save (though that’s a huge bonus). It’s the fact that you walk into your living room, see that funky gold-leaf vase, and think, “Yeah, I made that.”

Don’t stress about making everything perfect. My first geometric string art looked like a drunk spider designed it. But it’s mine, and it’s on my wall, and I love it. Pick one project from this list that scares you the least and just go for it. Your walls are waiting.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a glue gun and a bag of old wine corks. Wish me luck.
