We’ve all been there. It’s the week (or, let’s be honest, the night) before a costume party, and panic starts to set in. You could buy something overpriced that feels flimsy and looks like it will fall apart after one wear, or you can raid your closet, grab some supplies, and make something way cooler.

I’m a firm believer that the best costumes come from a little bit of creativity and a lot of “I can probably make that.” Forget the stress of ordering something online that never shows up. I’ve put together a list of 25 DIY costumes for women that work for literally any theme—whether it’s a decade party, a pop culture night, or just a general “dress up and eat snacks” kind of event.

Grab a glue gun (my personal hero), and let’s get started. 🙂

Classic & Easy Costumes

These are your go-to options when you need something fast, fun, and instantly recognizable. No sewing skills required, I promise.

1. The Rosie the Riveter

This one is a powerhouse. It’s empowering, simple, and everyone loves it.

  • What You Need: A chambray or denim shirt (roll the sleeves up!), a red bandana, and some red lipstick.
  • How to Do It: Put your hair in a low ponytail, wrap the bandana around your head, and tie it at the top so it holds your ponytail. Pop on the shirt, flex that arm, and you’re good to go. I wore this a few years back and got stopped constantly for photos—it’s a crowd-pleaser for sure.

2. The Tourist

This is the ultimate “I dug this out of my closet in five minutes” costume. Ever shown up to a party and realized you’re wearing the same thing as three other people? :/ That rarely happens with this one because the accessories make it.

  • What You Need: The loudest floral print shirt or dress you can find (or borrow from a parent), high-waisted shorts or jeans, white sneakers, and critical accessories: a fanny pack, a map (from a gas station or printed online), and cheap sunglasses.
  • How to Do It: Just dress like you’re about to complain about the exchange rate at a gift shop. Bonus points if you carry a disposable camera.

3. The 50s Sock Hop Girl

Poodle skirts are great, but they can be bulky. Here’s a twist.

  • What You Need: A simple fit-and-flare dress (vintage style if you have it), a colored bandana, white sneakers or Keds, and a men’s letterman jacket if you can snag one.
  • How to Do It: Pull your hair back into a high ponytail and curl the ends. Tie the bandana around your neck. It’s a sweet, nostalgic look that takes zero effort.

4. Wednesday Addams

Channeling your inner goth has never been easier. And honestly, it’s the perfect costume for when you don’t want to smile in pictures.

  • What You Need: A black dress with a white collar (or a black top with a white collared shirt underneath), black tights, and black shoes.
  • How to Do It: Braid two pieces of hair in the front and pin them back. The key is the expression: look straight ahead with a blank, mildly annoyed stare. Nailed it.

5. A Nerd (The Classic)

This one is all about the details. We’re going for bookish, not offensive.

  • What You Need: High-waisted pants or a skirt, a sweater vest over a button-up shirt, thick-rimmed glasses (even if you don’t need them), and high socks.
  • How to Do It: Do your hair in two braids or pigtails. Carry a few textbooks or a big, chunky book. I added some “pocket protectors” made from index cards and pens for a fun touch.

Pop Culture & Movie Costumes

These are great for themed parties where you know everyone is going to be quoting movies all night.

6. Elle Woods from Legally Blonde

Work out, bend, and snap! This costume requires a bright pink mindset.

  • What You Need: A pink dress (any shade works, but the brighter, the better), pink heels or shoes, and a fluffy pen or notebook.
  • How to Do It: Style your hair long and straight or in curls. If you have a small, well-behaved dog, you’ve just won Halloween. If not, just practice your “bend and snap” technique on the way to the party.

7. Peggy Carter

For all the Marvel fans who love a woman in a smart suit. It’s classy and understated.

  • What You Need: A teal or blue button-up blouse, a red lip, a black blazer, and dark pants or a pencil skirt.
  • How to Do It: Put your hair in victory rolls if you’re feeling fancy, or just style it in soft waves. I wore this to a comic-con and felt like I could take on a room full of spies.

8. Daisy Buchanan

Get out your sparkly headbands and fringe.

  • What You Need: A drop-waist dress (preferably white or gold with sparkles), a long string of pearls, a sparkly headband, and a feather boa (optional).
  • How to Do It: Finger waves are the classic hairstyle here, but if that’s too tricky, just go for sleek, shiny waves. Carry a champagne glass and look longingly into the distance.

9. Kim Possible

She’s the girl who can do anything, and so can you. This costume is super comfortable.

  • What You Need: Black cargo capris (or you can cut some old cargo pants), a black turtleneck or fitted long-sleeve shirt, and a utility belt (make one from an old belt and attach small pouches).
  • How to Do It: Pull your hair back into a high ponytail with a chunk of hair wrapped around the base. And remember, “call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me.”

10. Black Widow

This is a fantastic “tough girl” costume that relies heavily on your own style.

  • What You Need: A black tactical vest (you can find cheap ones online or modify an old fishing vest), a black long-sleeve shirt, black pants, and combat boots.
  • How to Do It: Pull your hair back into a sleek bun or braid. Add some “weapons” like toy guns or batons if the party allows. The key is the confident, slightly mysterious stance.

Clever & Punny Costumes

Get ready for the groans and the laughs. These are the best conversation starters.

11. Cereal Killer

A total classic for a reason. It’s visual and hilarious.

  • What You Need: An old white t-shirt, red fabric paint or a red marker, and several small boxes of cereal.
  • How to Do It: Use the red paint to draw “blood” slash marks on the shirt. Then, glue or tape the mini cereal boxes to the shirt, but make them look like they are “stabbing” you. Use a plastic knife to pin a box of “Wheaties” to your shoulder. I did this in college and people still bring it up.

12. A “Smart” Cookie

Perfect for a book lover or a teacher.

  • What You Need: A brown dress or brown shirt and pants, a clear plastic bag or cellophane, and a label maker or marker.
  • How to Do It: Fill the bag with those miniature chocolate chip cookies (the ones in the yellow bag). Attach a label that says “Smart Cookies.” You just walk around handing out cookies to people. Who doesn’t love that?

13. French Kiss

Ooh la la. This one is cheeky and ridiculously easy.

  • What You Need: A black and white striped shirt, a red beret, and red lipstick.
  • How to Do It: Dress like a stereotypical Parisian. Then, buy a bag of those chocolate “Hershey’s Kisses” and tape or pin them all over your shirt. Instant “French Kiss.”

14. Social Security Number

Grab a calculator, because this one is for the nerdy humor.

  • What You Need: A white t-shirt and fabric markers or iron-on letters.
  • How to Do It: Write “Social Security” on the front of the shirt in a blocky, official-looking font. On the back, write a random series of numbers (like 123-45-6789). You are literally a Social Security Number. I saw someone do this once and I laughed for a solid five minutes.

15. Tinker Bell (In a Jar)

This is a genius take on the fairy.

  • What You Need: A green dress, green tights, a clear plastic hula hoop or a large piece of clear plastic sheeting, and some battery-operated fairy lights.
  • How to Do It: This is a bit more involved, but the idea is to attach the clear plastic around you in a cylinder shape to look like a jar. Wear the green fairy costume inside. Wrap the fairy lights around yourself or the “jar.” You’re Tinker Bell, trapped in a jar!

Group & Bestie Costumes

Grab your friends, because these ideas work great for duos or small groups.

16. The Golden Girls

This is the ultimate friend group costume. It works for any age, honestly.

  • What You Need: Robes, nightgowns, fluffy slippers, and curlers in your hair.
  • How to Do It: Assign roles: Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. Each has a distinct style (Dorothy is tall and dry, Rose is sweet and clueless, Blanche is flashy, and Sophia has a purse and a sharp tongue). Grab some cheesecake (or a prop version) and you’re set.

17. Salt and Pepper

Simple, monochromatic, and perfect for two.

  • What You Need: For Salt: All white clothes. For Pepper: All black clothes with maybe some grey.
  • How to Do It: Make signs to hang around your necks that say “S” and “P.” Or, get more creative and cover a shirt in white pompoms (for salt crystals) or black circles (for pepper flakes).

18. Barbie and Ken

With the movie hype, this is a goldmine.

  • What You Need: Neon everything. Think 80s and 90s workout wear. For Barbie: a bright leotard, leggings, and leg warmers. For Ken: a denim vest over a neon tank top.
  • How to Do It: Big hair, big smiles, and lots of pink and purple. You can even pick specific eras like “Western Barbie” or “Disco Ken.”

19. The Spice Girls

Zig-a-zig-ah! This is a fantastic group costume for 3-5 people.

  • What You Need: This depends on which Spice you are.
    • Posh: A little black dress and a pout.
    • Sporty: Athletic wear and a ponytail.
    • Scary: Leopard print and platform boots.
    • Baby: A baby doll dress and a pacifier on a string.
    • Ginger: A Union Jack dress (or top) and a sassy attitude.
  • How to Do It: Just commit to the persona. It’s all about the attitude, girl power!

Literary & Retro Costumes

For the bookworms and the vintage lovers.

20. Where’s Waldo?

This one is so simple, but people love spotting you in a crowd.

  • What You Need: A red and white striped shirt, a red beanie, blue pants or jeans, and round glasses.
  • How to Do It: That’s literally it. Just stand in a corner and look like you’re searching for something. Waldo is always lost, so you’re in character all night.

21. Alice in Wonderland

There are so many versions of this, but the classic Disney look is always a hit.

  • What You Need: A light blue dress with a white apron (you can sew a white pillowcase onto a blue dress if you’re crafty), black flats, and a black headband.
  • How to Do It: Grow your hair out long and blonde, or get a cheap wig. Carry a “Drink Me” bottle (a small glass bottle with a label) for authenticity.

22. Holly Golightly

Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It’s the epitome of chic.

  • What You Need: A classic little black dress, long black gloves (evening gloves), a pearl necklace, a tiara or sparkly headband, and a long cigarette holder (or a prop).
  • How to Do It: Put your hair in a sophisticated updo. The key is the attitude—elegant, slightly aloof, and holding a pastry (or a prop donut) while looking in a shop window.

23. A Flapper

The 1920s are a perennial favorite for a reason.

  • What You Need: A fringe dress (or a drop-waist dress you can add fringe to), a long pearl necklace, a feather headband, and T-strap heels.
  • How to Do It: Smoke-y eye makeup and a red lip. Learn the Charleston on YouTube before you go. I made a fringe skirt from an old t-shirt and some fringe trim from a craft store—super easy!

Final Few Favorites

Just squeezing in a few more genius ideas!

24. Tetris Block

If you love gaming and minimal effort, this is it.

  • What You Need: A large cardboard box big enough to fit over your torso, paint in a Tetris block color (red, blue, green, yellow).
  • How to Do It: Cut the box to be a rectangular block shape that sits on your shoulders. Paint it to look like a Tetris piece (like the long I-block or the square O-block). You’re literally a human Tetris piece.

25. Cosmic Glow Galaxy

This is for when you want to be otherworldly.

  • What You Need: A black leotard or black shirt and leggings, neon or glow-in-the-dark fabric paint, and a black light (if the party has one).
  • How to Do It: Splatter the paint all over the black clothes to look like stars and galaxies. Do your makeup with glitter and dark, shimmery eyeshadow. Under a black light, you’ll look like a living galaxy. I did this one year and it was the coolest effect.

Wrapping This Up

So there you have it—25 ways to avoid the boring, overpriced costume trap. The best part about DIY is that you can put your own spin on everything. Mix and match ideas, raid your grandma’s attic, and don’t be afraid to get a little messy with the glue gun.

Which one are you going to try first? Or do you have a go-to DIY costume that I missed? I’d love to hear about your own creations! Happy crafting, and have fun at your party! 🙂
