Is there anything better than that first crisp day in late September when the air just changes? You know the one. The humidity breaks, there’s a tiny bite in the wind, and suddenly, all I want to do is wear flannel and make my apartment smell like a walking, talking Yankee Candle. But have you seen the price of those things lately? I have, and I nearly choked on my pumpkin spice latte.

So, a few years ago, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I figured, “How hard can it be to melt some wax and dump cinnamon in it?” Spoiler alert: it’s not hard at all, but my first attempt resulted in something that looked like a cinnamon sugar swamp monster. :/ I’ve learned a lot since then, and now I’m basically a candle-making wizard. Today, I’m sharing my top four favorite cozy DIY cinnamon candle recipes for fall. They’re simple, they’ll make your house smell incredible, and they won’t cost you a small fortune. Ready to get your craft on?

Before We Melt Stuff: The Lazy Person’s Shopping List

Before we jump into the recipes, let’s talk supplies. You don’t need a fancy workshop for this. I do all my candle-making on my kitchen stove while simultaneously burning toast. It’s a system. Here’s the gear you’ll need:

  • Soy Wax Flakes: I use these because they burn cleanly and hold scent really well. Plus, soap and water clean up any spills easily.
  • Candle Wicks with Tabs: Get the pre-tabbed ones. Attaching wicks is not a fun way to spend an afternoon, IMO.
  • Heat-Proof Containers: I’m a big fan of thrifting cute little mason jars, vintage teacups, or even using clean tin cans.
  • A Wooden Skewer or Pencil: This is to hold your wick in place while the wax sets. Fancy, right?
  • A Pouring Pot or an Old Saucepan: I have a dedicated pot for this because nothing says “yummy pasta” like a hint of clove and cinnamon.
  • Thermometer (Optional but Helpful): Takes the guesswork out of it. But if you’re a rebel, you can wing it.
  • And of course, our star players: Cinnamon essential oil and whole cinnamon sticks.

A Quick Safety Chat (Because I Like You)

We’re playing with hot wax here, people. It’s not molten lava, but it will give you a nasty burn if you’re not careful. Always melt wax using low to medium heat, and never, ever leave it unattended. I know, you’re busy, but trust me, a wax fire is not the vibe we’re going for this fall. Also, keep a close eye on the temp—around 185°F is the sweet spot for pouring.

Recipe 1: The “Simple & Classic” Cinnamon Stick Candle

This is the recipe I started with, and it’s basically foolproof. It’s less about complicated scent blending and more about that clean, straightforward cinnamon smell that just screams “autumn.”

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup soy wax flakes
  • Your chosen container
  • 1 candle wick with a tab
  • 5-6 whole cinnamon sticks
  • 40-50 drops of cinnamon essential oil

Let’s Get Crafty:

  1. Prep Your Wick: Stick the metal tab of your wick to the bottom center of your clean, dry container. I usually put a tiny dab of hot glue or even just a bit of melted wax to hold it in place.
  2. Melt the Wax: Pour your soy wax flakes into your pouring pot and melt them over medium heat, stirring occasionally. You want it fully melted and clear, but not bubbling.
  3. Set the Scene (and the Wick): While the wax melts, place your cinnamon sticks around the inside edge of the container, leaning against the wall. They’ll look super rustic and pretty.
  4. Add the Scent: Once your wax is fully melted, take it off the heat. Let it cool for a minute or two, then stir in your cinnamon essential oil. Pro-tip: Do this off the heat, or the scent can burn off and you’ll be left with candles that smell like… well, nothing.
  5. Pour and Secure: Carefully pour the hot wax into your prepared container. Then, take your skewer or pencil and wrap the top of the wick around it, laying it across the top of the container so the wick stays perfectly centered.
  6. The Hardest Part: Waiting: Let it cool completely, for at least 4-6 hours. Don’t poke it! Once it’s solid, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. Light it up and bask in the cozy glow.

Recipe 2: The “Apple Orchard Escape” Cinnamon & Apple Candle

Ever wondered why apple and cinnamon are such a classic pair? It’s because they’re soulmates. This combo is like a hayride in a jar. It’s sweet, it’s fresh, and it instantly makes any room feel more inviting.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup soy wax flakes
  • Container and wick
  • 40 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 30 drops apple spice or red apple essential oil
  • Dried apple slices (for decoration)

Let’s Get Crafty:

  1. Follow Steps 1 & 2 from Recipe 1. Get that wax melting and get your wick secured in your container.
  2. The Aroma Magic: After you take the wax off the heat, let it cool slightly. Then, add your cinnamon and apple essential oils. The smell at this point is intoxicating. Seriously, you’ll want to drink it. Don’t.
  3. Pour and Decorate: Pour the wax into the container.
  4. The Final Touch: While the wax is still liquid but starting to set (you’ll see a thin skin forming on top), gently place a few dried apple slices on the surface. If you put them in too early, they’ll sink to the bottom. If you wait too long, they won’t stick. It’s a Goldilocks situation.
  5. Let it set, trim the wick, and enjoy! This one makes a fantastic gift, by the way.

Recipe 3: The “Hot Toddy For Your Home” Cinnamon & Orange Candle

Okay, this is my absolute favorite. There’s something about the brightness of orange that cuts through the warmth of cinnamon in the best way possible. It’s like a spicy, citrusy hug. Plus, it’s a total budget-friendly option if you use fresh orange peel.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup soy wax flakes
  • Container and wick
  • 35 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 35 drops sweet orange essential oil
  • Strips of fresh orange peel (no white pith, please!)
  • A few whole cloves (optional, but highly recommended)

Let’s Get Crafty:

  1. Prep and Melt: Secure your wick and melt your wax as we’ve done before.
  2. Scent Synergy: Once the wax is melted and off the heat, stir in the cinnamon and orange essential oils.
  3. Pour and Add Zest: Pour the wax into your container. Now, while it’s still wet, take your strips of orange peel and press them gently against the inside of the glass. This creates a really beautiful, layered look. If you’re using cloves, sprinkle a few on top.
  4. Center the Wick: Don’t forget to set your wick! Use that skewer.
  5. Patience, Grasshopper: Let it cool completely. The orange peel will look gorgeous against the creamy wax. FYI, the orange peel isn’t just for looks; as the candle burns, it gently warms the peel, releasing even more of that fresh scent. It’s a game-changer.

Recipe 4: The “Dessert First” Churro Candle (Cinnamon & Vanilla)

This one is for the sweet tooths. If you want your house to smell like a county fair, this is your candle. The vanilla adds a creamy, sugary note that makes the cinnamon smell like it’s been rolled in sugar and fried to perfection. It’s dangerous. It will make you hungry.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 cup soy wax flakes
  • Container and wick
  • 45 drops cinnamon essential oil
  • 25 drops vanilla essential oil (use a good quality one, the cheap stuff can smell like plastic)
  • Ground cinnamon, for sprinkling

Let’s Get Crafty:

  1. The Usual Suspects: Get that wax melting and your wick secured.
  2. Create the Churro Vibe: After removing the wax from the heat, stir in the cinnamon and vanilla essential oils. Give it a good sniff. Pure heaven, right?
  3. The First Pour: Pour about half of the wax into your container.
  4. The Magic Swirl: Before it sets, take a pinch of ground cinnamon and sprinkle it lightly over the top of the poured wax. It will sink in slightly.
  5. Top It Off: Immediately pour the rest of your wax over the top. This creates a lovely, subtle swirl of color and scent within the candle.
  6. Set the Wick and Wait: Let it harden. Once it’s set, the top might have a little bit of a speckled look from the cinnamon, which I think is adorable. This candle is pure comfort.

My Two Cents on Making These Gifts

Honestly, these DIY cinnamon candles make the best hostess gifts. Around the holidays, I’ll whip up a batch of these, tie a piece of rustic twine around the jar with a little tag that says the scent, and boom—a personalized, thoughtful gift that cost me about five bucks to make. People are always so impressed, and I just smile and nod, remembering my swamp monster days. 🙂 It’s a great feeling.

Wrapping This Up (Before I Burn the House Down)

So there you have it: four ridiculously easy ways to make your home smell like the coziest version of fall without dropping a ton of cash on fancy store-bought candles. Whether you’re a fan of the simple, classic scent or you want your living room to smell like a churro stand, there’s a recipe here for you.

Have you tried making your own candles before? I’d love to hear about your creations (or your hilarious disasters) in the comments below! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a cinnamon stick and a very empty jar.
