We’ve all stood in front of our closet, overflowing with clothes, and muttered the immortal words: “I have nothing to wear.” It’s a tragedy, really. You could go out and buy another hoodie, but where’s the fun in that? Plus, my wallet gives me the side-eye every time I even think about stepping into a mall.

That’s where the magic of DIY comes in. You get to take something basic and turn it into a one-of-a-kind piece that screams you. And what better way to add a dose of adorable to your wardrobe than with hearts? Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or just think hearts are a cute aesthetic, these four DIY heart hoodie ideas are about to become your new best friends.

I’ve tried all of these methods myself (sometimes with hilarious results), and I’m here to walk you through each one. No fancy skills required, I promise. Just grab an old hoodie and let’s get crafting!

1. The Classic Felt Appliqué Heart

This is the granddaddy of all heart hoodie DIYs, and for good reason. It’s simple, looks super professional, and is almost impossible to mess up. Plus, felt is a forgiving fabric—it doesn’t fray, so you don’t have to worry about your hard work unraveling in the wash.

What You’ll Need

  • A hoodie (pre-washed, so it doesn’t shrink after you’ve done all this work!)
  • Craft felt or wool blend felt in your favorite color
  • Fabric scissors (please, for the love of all that is crafty, use sharp ones!)
  • Fabric glue or a needle and thread
  • Pins or fabric chalk
  • A heart template (you can freehand it, but a template is your BFF here)

Let’s Get Stitching (Or Gluing!)

First, you need to decide on your heart size. I like to go big and bold, right in the center of the chest. Print out a heart template from your computer, or just draw one on a piece of cardboard. This template is your blueprint, so don’t skip this step!

Pin the paper heart to your felt and carefully cut it out. Remember, you can’t uncut, so take your time. I once tried to rush this and ended up with a heart that looked more like a lumpy potato. Not a cute look. :/

Now, position the felt heart on your hoodie. Step back and look at it. Is it straight? Does it spark joy? If yes, great! You have two options here:

  • The Lazy (but effective) way: Use fabric glue. Apply a thin, even layer to the back of the heart and press it firmly onto the hoodie. Let it dry according to the glue’s instructions. This is perfect for no-sew lovers.
  • The Durable way: Pin the heart in place and stitch around the edges with a needle and thread. You can use a simple running stitch or a blanket stitch for a more decorative look.

I’m a fan of the lazy glue method, but if you’re hard on your clothes (like me, who manages to stain everything), the stitching will hold up better in the long run.

2. The No-Fuss Iron-On Vinyl Heart

Ever wondered why store-bought graphic tees look so crisp? The secret is often heat transfer vinyl (HTV). It gives you that sleek, printed-on look without any of the puckering you can get with sewing. And the best part? It’s basically glorified ironing.

Choosing Your Vinyl

HTV comes in a million colors and finishes. You can get matte, glossy, glitter, holographic… the list goes on! For a first-timer, I’d recommend a standard matte or glossy vinyl. It’s the easiest to work with.

The Cutting and Pressing Process

If you have a Cricut or Silhouette, you’re in luck. You can just have the machine cut out a perfect heart for you. But if you’re a pen-and-paper kind of person like I was for years, don’t worry! You can buy pre-cut sheets of HTV or just cut your heart out with scissors.

Here’s the golden rule of HTV: Everything is backwards! You need to mirror your design before cutting so that when you iron it on, the heart faces the right way. Since a heart is usually symmetrical, you can ignore this, but it’s a good habit to get into for future projects.

Once your heart is cut, you’ll need to “weed” it—that’s just a fancy term for peeling away the excess vinyl around your design, leaving the heart stuck to the clear carrier sheet.

Place the carrier sheet with the heart onto your hoodie. Cover it with a thin cloth (like a pillowcase) to protect it, and press down with a hot iron. Use firm pressure, but don’t slide the iron around! Just press and hold for about 10-15 seconds. Repeat until the whole heart is heated. Let it cool, then peel off the carrier sheet. Magic!

FYI, the first time I did this, I peeled the sheet while it was still hot and pulled the vinyl right off with it. Learn from my mistake—patience is a virtue! 😉

3. The Cozy Heart Sweater Weather Hack

Okay, this one is less of a “cut and paste” and more of a “transform what you have.” It’s perfect if you have an old, chunky knit sweater or hoodie that needs a little CPR. We’re going for that hygge, cozy-chic vibe here.

Working with Chunky Knits

The trick with thick, textured fabrics is to work with the texture, not against it. Instead of cutting fabric to apply, we’re going to use yarn to stitch a heart directly onto the hoodie. It gives it this amazing, homespun feel.

Embroidery for the Impatient

Don’t run away at the word “embroidery”! This isn’t your grandma’s fancy flower garden. This is just basic stitching with thick yarn.

You’ll need:

  • Your chunky knit hoodie
  • A darning needle (it has a big eye for thick yarn)
  • Some contrasting, chunky yarn

First, lightly draw your heart shape onto the hoodie with fabric chalk. Because the fabric is textured, you might just want to eyeball it. I prefer eyeballing it—it adds to the handmade charm.

Thread your needle with the yarn. Don’t double it over; just use a single strand. Starting from the inside of the hoodie, push the needle out at the edge of your heart. Then, take a small stitch back down. You’re just creating an outline. The stitches should be visible and chunky—that’s the whole point!

Keep stitching around your heart outline. You can stop there for a minimalist look, or you can fill in the heart by making long, straight stitches across it. This technique is so forgiving. If you mess up, just pull the yarn out and start again. It’s like knitting’s cool, relaxed cousin.

4. The Upcycled Statement Heart

This one is for the rebels. The ones who look at a plain hoodie and think, “You know what this needs? A giant, textured, over-the-top heart made from another piece of clothing.” I love this method because it’s sustainable and creates a piece that is truly unique.

Raiding Your Closet (or Thrift Store)

Go find an old sweater, a flannel shirt, or even a piece of velvet fabric from something you never wear anymore. The contrast in texture is what makes this pop. I once used an old cable-knit sweater sleeve to make a heart on a plain cotton hoodie, and it looked incredible.

How to Attach Your Fabric Scrap

This is a variation of the appliqué method, but with a twist. Cut your heart shape out of your chosen upcycled fabric. If it’s a knit fabric (like from a sweater), it might curl at the edges. Don’t panic! That curl can add awesome dimension.

Pin the heart onto your hoodie. Because the fabric is thicker, you’ll definitely want to sew this one on. Glue might not hold as well.

Use a needle and thread and stitch around the edge. Because the fabric edge might be raw and bulky, you can use a technique where you do bigger, bolder stitches on purpose. Make it a design feature! Use a bright, contrasting thread and just go for it.

IMO, the wonkier this looks, the cooler it is. It tells a story. Every time you wear it, people will ask, “Where did you get that?” and you get to say, with a smirk, “I made it from my old sweater.”

Time to Rock Your New Favorite Hoodie

So there you have it—four ridiculously easy ways to turn a boring hoodie into a heart-filled masterpiece. Whether you’re a glue-gun-guru, a vinyl-virtuoso, or a stitching-skeptic, there’s a method here with your name on it.

My advice? Start with the felt appliqué. It’s the most straightforward and gives you that instant gratification we all crave. Then, once you’ve got your confidence up, raid your closet and try the upcycled version. Who knows what you’ll create?

Now, go forth and make something cute! And when you do, I want to hear all about it. What color did you use? Did you run into any funny mishaps? Drop a comment below and share the crafty love. Happy DIYing! 🙂
