So, you’ve decided to throw a party themed after the sweetest board game in existence. Good for you! You’re either a hero parent, a nostalgic adult with no chill, or someone who just really loves the color pink. Whatever brought you here, you need decorations, and you probably don’t want to spend your life savings on pre-made plastic lollipops that will just end up in a landfill.
I’ve been down this sugary rabbit hole myself. For my daughter’s last birthday, I swore I’d just buy a kit. Then I saw the price tag and nearly choked on my coffee. So, I grabbed my glue gun and figured it out. Turns out, making this stuff yourself is not only cheaper, but it’s also way more fun. Here are seven DIY Candy Land decorations that are so easy, you’ll wonder why you ever considered buying them.
1. The Giant Lollipop Welcome Arch
Every great party needs a great entrance, right? You want your guests to walk in and immediately feel like they’ve stepped onto the game board. A giant lollipop arch is the ultimate “hello” sign.
What You’ll Need
- Pool noodles: Grab a few in bright colors like pink, red, and yellow.
- Duct tape: Get the glossy, colorful kind. It looks way better than the standard silver stuff.
- Clear fishing line or zip ties: For securing everything.
- PVC pipe or a sturdy yard stake: This will be your arch’s structure.
- Cellophane wrap: The kind you use for gift baskets.
Let’s Build It
First, take your pool noodles and bend them into a circle, taping the ends together with duct tape to form a lollipop shape. Once you have a few of these circles, wrap each one completely in cellophane to give them that classic candy shimmer. Secure the cellophane at the back with tape.
Next, attach your finished lollipops to the PVC arch using zip ties or fishing line. Space them out so it looks like a grand, sugary gateway. I learned the hard way that fishing line is invisible and looks cleaner, but zip ties are faster if you’re in a rush. Stick the whole thing in a bucket of sand or secure it to the ground, and boom—you’ve got an entrance that’s pure magic. Why pay a hundred bucks for this when you can make it for under twenty?
2. Peppermint Forest Floor Disks
The Peppermint Forest is iconic. Those swirly red and white candies are everywhere in Candy Land. Let’s bring them to life on your floor or tables.
Materials
- Cardboard circles: You can cut these out of old moving boxes.
- Red and white acrylic paint: The cheap craft paint works perfectly.
- Painters tape: To get those clean lines.
- Mod Podge (optional): For a glossy finish and durability.
The Process
Paint the entire cardboard circle white first. Let it dry—I know, waiting is boring, but it’s crucial. Once dry, apply strips of painters tape in a spiral pattern. Paint the exposed areas red. When you peel the tape off after it dries, you’ll have a perfect swirl.
I like to use these as placemats or scatter them around the base of your snack table. They’re lightweight, easy to store, and if you seal them with Mod Podge, they’ll survive any accidental drink spills. Ever wonder why store-bought decor feels so flimsy? Because they know you’ll just buy more next year. These things are built to last.
3. Lollipop Lane Lanterns
Remember Lollipop Lane? We need some serious color blocking here. This is less about realism and more about capturing that “Lollipop Woods” vibe with hanging decor.
Gather This
- Plain paper lanterns: Get them in white or cream from a party store or online.
- Colored tissue paper: In hot pink, lime green, orange, and purple.
- Mod Podge or diluted white glue: Your best friend for decoupage.
- A foam brush.
Creating the Look
Tear the tissue paper into strips and patches—don’t cut it neatly, tearing gives a softer, more organic look. Use the foam brush to apply Mod Podge to a section of the lantern, lay down a tissue paper patch, and brush more Mod Podge over the top. Layer the colors like a crazy quilt.
Hang them at different heights from the ceiling. When the light shines through, the colors glow like giant, ethereal suckers. It’s a super cheap way to fill vertical space and it looks way more expensive than it actually is. IMO, this is the one decoration that guests always ask about.
4. Gumdrop Pass Centerpieces
You need something for the tables, right? Something that looks good enough to eat but won’t attract ants before the party even starts. Enter the gumdrop tower.
Your Shopping List
- Styrofoam cones: The pointy ones you use for making Christmas trees.
- A massive bag of fake gumdrops: Check the floral section at a craft store. They’re usually foam.
- A glue gun and approximately one million glue sticks.
- A small wooden base or a sturdy plate.
Assembly Time
Start gluing gumdrops at the base of the Styrofoam cone, working your way up in rows. Overlap them so you can’t see the green foam peeking through. It’s tedious, but honestly, it’s kind of meditative. Put on a good podcast and zone out.
Place one of these on every table. They’re colorful, they’re chunky, and they perfectly represent the “Gumdrop Mountains” region of the board. Just don’t leave them near a heat source, or you’ll have a very sad, melted sculpture on your hands. :/
5. Chocolate Swamp Cake Pop Stand
The “Chocolate Swamp” is a little less cheerful than the rest of the board, but we can make it delicious. This is a decoration that doubles as a snack. My favorite kind of project.
What You Need
- A styrofoam block: Wrapped in brown craft paper.
- Moss: The fake, green, fluffy kind from the craft store.
- Cake pops: Make your own or buy a box from a bakery.
- Brown and green sprinkles.
How to Build It
Cover the styrofoam block with brown paper so it looks like a muddy swamp bank. Glue moss around the base and on top in patches. Poke holes in the foam to hold your cake pop sticks.
For the cake pops themselves, dip them in chocolate and while they’re wet, sprinkle on green sanding sugar or green sprinkles to look like swamp slime. Stick them into the foam. It looks like a whimsical, muddy swamp sprouting delicious treats. It’s functional decor! Guests can just grab one. It’s genius.
6. Queen Frostine’s Icicle Backdrop
Every party needs a photo op. Let’s build a backdrop inspired by the Ice Cream Sea or Queen Frostine’s chilly domain. It’s sparkly, cold-looking, and ridiculously easy.
Materials
- A blue plastic tablecloth or a flat sheet.
- Fishing line.
- A pack of plastic gems and silver tinsel garland.
- Cotton batting.
Making It Magical
Hang the blue tablecloth on a wall as your base. Using fishing line, hang strands of silver tinsel in front of it to look like icicles. Glue plastic gems to the fishing line so they look like frozen droplets.
Pull apart some cotton batting and stretch it thin, attaching it to the top to look like clouds or snowy hills. When people stand in front of it for photos, the flash catches the tinsel and gems, and it looks like a winter wonderland. It’s a high-impact backdrop for basically pocket change.
7. The Gingerbread Plum Tree
Last but not least, we need a tree. In Candy Land, even the trees are edible. This one is inspired by the “Gingerbread Plum Tree” area—sweet and a little quirky.
Grab These
- A large branch or a small artificial tree: Something with multiple limbs.
- Air-dry clay or salt dough.
- Brown and purple paint.
- Ribbon or twine.
Let’s Get Crafty
If you’re using a real branch, spray paint it brown to freshen it up. While that dries, make your “plums” out of clay. Roll small balls and bake or air-dry them according to your clay’s instructions. Paint them a deep purple.
Tie the plums to the tree branches with ribbon or twine. You can also make little gingerbread men out of clay and hang them there too. Place the tree in a pot covered with brown fabric. It’s the perfect accent piece for a corner or next to the snack table.
Time to Get Sticky
See? You don’t need a TV crew to pull off an amazing Candy Land party. You just need a little time, a hot glue gun, and the willingness to raid the dollar store for pool noodles. My personal favorite is the cake pop swamp—mostly because you get to eat the “decorations” at the end of the night.
Have you tried any of these? I’d love to hear about your own sugary creations. Go forth and make your party the sweetest one on the block!
