Remember when we were kids and DIY meant gluing some dried macaroni onto a paper plate and calling it art? Well, I don’t know about you, but my standards (and my access to better glue guns) have changed a bit.

If you’re anything like me, you’re looking for a creative outlet that doesn’t require a studio art degree or a second mortgage to fund the supplies. You want to make something cool, functional, or just pretty to look at, but the thought of a complicated project with a 20-page instruction manual makes you want to take a nap.

I’ve been there more times than I can count. I’ve bought the supplies for ambitious projects, let them sit in a closet for two years, and then finally donated them, feeling a strange mix of failure and freedom. :/ So, I decided to curate a list of crafts that are actually fun, totally doable, and perfect for a weekend afternoon with a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine, no judgment here). These are my go-to projects when I need to de-stress and make something with my hands. Let’s get into it!

The Crafts

1. Painted Wine Glasses

Ever stare at a blank wine glass and think, “You know what? You’re too plain.”? Me too.

Grab a glass (thrift stores are goldmines for this), some enamel paint pens, and go to town. You can do polka dots, stripes, or if you’re feeling fancy, try your hand at a little floral design.

  • Why I love it: It’s practically foolproof. If you mess up, you can just wipe it off with a little nail polish remover before you bake it to set the paint.
  • Pro Tip: Bake the glasses in the oven according to the paint instructions to make them dishwasher safe. I learned this the hard way after hand-washing my favorite set for a year.

2. DIY Concrete Planters

This sounds way more industrial and hardcore than it actually is, I promise. You just need some quick-dry cement mix, water, and two plastic containers (one small, one large) to use as molds.

Mix the cement, pour it into the larger container, and press the smaller container inside to create the hollow center. Use a rock or tape to hold the inner cup in place. Let it set for 24 hours, then peel away the plastic. Voila! You have a super chic, modern planter.

  • Word to the wise: Wear gloves. Cement is basically rock, and you don’t want that drying on your hands. Also, this project is seriously satisfying.

3. No-Sew Fleece Blankets

Remember making these at summer camp? They’re back, baby, and they’re better than ever. This is the ultimate lazy-person craft (and I mean that as a compliment).

Cut two pieces of fleece to the same size. Cut fringe along all four edges (about 4-6 inches deep), then simply tie the top and bottom fringe strips together in double knots. That’s it. You now have a cozy blanket that probably cost you $15.

  • IMO, this is the best gift for anyone who says they “have everything.” Who doesn’t want a new blanket?

4. Gold Leaf Decor

Want to make something look expensive without actually spending the money? Gold leaf is your new best friend.

You can buy a kit with adhesive and gold leaf sheets for pretty cheap online. Go to a thrift store and find a sad-looking vase, a picture frame, or even some random animal figurines. Paint on the adhesive, wait for it to get tacky, and then apply the gold leaf. It’s a little finicky, but the flaws just add to the “antique” charm, right?

  • Rhetorical question: Why buy a $200 vase when you can make a $5 one look like a million bucks?

5. Customized Tote Bags

A plain canvas tote bag is a blank canvas begging for some personality. You have so many options here!

  • Fabric Markers: Draw a design directly on it.
  • Iron-On Vinyl: Use a Cricut or scissors to cut out a design and iron it on.
  • Stencils and Paint: Tape off a design and use fabric paint.

I made one with a giant pickle on it just because it made me laugh. Life’s too short for boring bags.

6. Macrame Wall Hanging

Macrame looks complicated, but it’s really just a series of knots. If you can tie your shoes, you can do this. Seriously.

Buy some cotton cord and a wooden dowel. Look up a tutorial for a basic square knot or lark’s head knot. Before you know it, you’ll have a boho-chic wall hanging that distracts people from that stain on the wall you can’t get out. 😉

  • Key Takeaway: Start with a simple pattern. Don’t try to make a giant, intricate piece your first time out. Small victories!

7. Painted Rocks

This is the ultimate low-stakes craft. Go outside, find some smooth rocks, wash them off, and paint them with acrylic paint. You can make them into inspirational message stones, little animals, or just abstract color blobs.

Hide them around your neighborhood for people to find, or just keep them on your desk as fidget toys. It’s cheap, cheerful, and there’s no pressure to be perfect.

8. DIY Candles

Making your own candles is surprisingly easy and makes your house smell like a fancy boutique. You just need soy wax flakes, a container (an old mason jar or coffee cup is perfect), a wick, and fragrance oil.

Melt the wax using the double-boiler method (a pot of boiling water with a heat-safe bowl on top), add the scent, secure the wick in the jar, and pour.

  • Warning: This hobby can become addictive. Soon you’ll be giving candles to everyone you know for every holiday.

9. Pressed Flower Art

Channel your inner Victorian botanist. Pick some flowers (or buy a bouquet), press them in a heavy book for a week or two, and then arrange them.

  • Use Mod Podge to glue them onto cardstock for a beautiful homemade card.
  • Arrange them in a frame for some free, nature-inspired art.
  • FYI, thicker flowers take longer to dry, so stick to daisies, pansies, or ferns.

10. String Art

String art is making a major comeback, and it’s super meditative. You hammer small nails into a wooden board in the shape of a heart, a state, or a word. Then, you wrap embroidery floss or thin string around the nails to fill in the shape.

It’s a great way to get out a little aggression (hammering nails), and then do something calming (wrapping string). It’s a win-win.

11. Poured Acrylic Paintings

This is for the control freaks among us who need to learn to let go. You literally cannot mess this up. You mix acrylic paint with a pouring medium (like Floetrol) and water, layer the colors in a cup, and then flip it onto a canvas.

Tip the canvas around to let the paint flow where it wants to go. The result is a unique, swirly, marbled piece of art.

  • Just do it outside or on a huge drop cloth unless you want your kitchen counters to look like a Jackson Pollock painting.

12. Homemade Bath Bombs

Store-bought bath bombs are crazy expensive. The homemade ones? Not so much. You mix baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch, and Epsom salts with some oil, water, and essential oils. Pack the mixture tightly into molds (Christmas ornament balls work great) and let them dry overnight.

Pop one in the tub after a long day, and you’ll feel like a DIY goddess.

13. Embroidered Patches

Got a denim jacket or a backpack with a stain or a small hole? Don’t throw it out—upgrade it! You can buy iron-on patches, or you can make your own.

Use a small embroidery hoop and some fabric to stitch a simple design—a heart, a cactus, a lightning bolt. Once it’s done, you can sew or iron it onto your clothes. It’s a great way to extend the life of your favorite items.

14. Marble Mugs

This is one of the easiest ways to fancy up your morning coffee routine. You’ll need a ceramic mug and some nail polish.

Fill a disposable pan with room-temperature water. Drop different colors of nail polish into the water; they’ll spread out into a film. Swirl them gently with a toothpick. Dip your mug into the water, and the polish will wrap around it in a cool, marbled pattern. Let it dry.

  • Disclaimer: Do NOT put these mugs in the dishwasher. Hand wash only!

15. Cork Coasters

Save up your wine corks (finally, a reason to drink that much wine!). You can slice them in half lengthwise and glue them in a pattern onto a corkboard base. Or, you can glue whole corks together in a square or circle shape.

They’re absorbent, look rustic, and are a great conversation starter.

16. DIY Face Masks (the skincare kind)

Skip the fancy spa and whip up a face mask with stuff from your kitchen. It feels decadent, and you know exactly what’s in it.

  • Soothing: Mashed avocado and honey.
  • Brightening: Plain yogurt and lemon juice.
  • Exfoliating: Finely ground oatmeal and milk.
Slather it on, relax for 15 minutes, and rinse off. Your skin will thank you, and your wallet will too.

17. Washi Tape Cards

Washi tape is like the duct tape of the crafting world—it fixes everything and looks cute doing it. If you need a birthday card but don’t want to spend $6 at the store, grab some blank cards and a few rolls of washi tape.

You can make stripes, geometric patterns, or even little tape “ribbons” on the front. It’s fast, there’s no glue mess, and it looks intentional and artsy.

18. Upcycled Tin Can Planters

Stop throwing away those tin cans from beans or tomatoes! Wash them out well (get the label off), and poke a few drainage holes in the bottom with a hammer and nail.

Then you can:

  • Spray paint them a fun color.
  • Wrap them in twine or rope.
  • Cover them in scrapbook paper with Mod Podge.
Plant some herbs or succulents in them, and you’ve got a cute little windowsill garden.

19. Fabric Scrap Garland

Have a bunch of fabric scraps left over from other projects? Don’t throw them away! Cut them into strips (about 1 inch wide and 6 inches long). Tie them onto a long piece of twine or yarn.

You can space them out or bunch them up for a fuller look. Hang it on your mantel, above a crib, or at a party. It’s boho, eco-friendly, and super cute.

20. Simple Decoupage Trays

Remember decoupage? It’s not just for grandma’s china cabinets anymore! Find a plain wooden tray at a craft store (or a thrift store). Tear up some pretty scrapbook paper, old sheet music, or pages from a book you don’t care about.

Use Mod Podge to glue the paper pieces onto the tray in a collage pattern. Once it’s dry, cover the whole thing with another coat of Mod Podge to seal it. You now have a chic tray for serving breakfast in bed or holding your remote controls.

Wrapping It Up

See? I told you they were easy. You don’t need a dedicated craft room or a huge budget to get your creative fix. You just need a little bit of time and the willingness to try something new.

My advice? Pick the one that scares you the least (or the one that requires the most wine) and just go for it. And remember, even if your project doesn’t turn out exactly like the Pinterest picture, you made something with your own two hands. That’s pretty cool in my book. Now go forth and create something awesome! 🙂
