Is there such a thing as too much sparkle? I personally don’t think so. Whether you’re looking to revamp an old phone case you’re bored with, or you want to add some pizzazz to a plain sweater, adding a little bling is basically therapy for the crafty soul. FYI, I’ve had days where just sorting through my stash of rhinestones has turned my whole mood around. 🙂
I’ve been bedazzling things since I was a kid (sorry, Mom, for the rhinestones I lost in the living room carpet), and I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way. So, grab your glue gun and your favorite glitter—we’re going to make some magic happen. Here are 8 of my favorite DIY bling crafts ideas that are actually doable on a Tuesday night.
1. Custom Blinged-Out Phone Case
Let’s start with the obvious, shall we? Your phone goes everywhere with you. It deserves to look fancy. Why settle for a boring black slab when you can have a portable disco ball?
Picking Your Base
You have two options here: a clear case or a solid color case. I’m a huge fan of clear silicone cases for this project because the bling looks like it’s floating against your actual phone. But if you’re using a colored phone, a solid case might make the gems pop more.
The “Flat Back” Rule
Never, and I mean never, use rounded beads for something you’re going to hold in your hand. They’ll roll off and you’ll be finding them in your car for years. You need flatback rhinestones. They’re designed to sit flush against the surface and actually stay put.
- Arrange first, glue second. Lay your design out on the case without glue to make sure you like the flow.
- Use E6000 glue. This stuff is the holy grail for crafts like this. It’s flexible and holds up to the heat your phone generates.
- Let it cure for 24 hours. I know, waiting is hard, but trust me on this one.
Ever wondered why some people’s phone bling falls off after a week? They skipped the curing time. Don’t be that person.
2. Disco Ball Planters
This is my latest obsession. Regular terra cotta pots are cute, but have you seen them covered in mirror tiles? It takes a boring succulent and turns it into a piece of art that screams “I have my life together” (even if your actual life is chaos).
Materials Matter
You’ll need some small mirror tiles (you can buy them in packs online), a terra cotta pot, and some strong tacky glue.
Application Tips for Curves
Applying flat mirrors to a round surface is trickier than it looks. You can’t just wrap it like tape.
- Start at the top rim. Work in rows, like you’re laying bricks.
- Use tweezers. Your fingers are too big for this precision work, IMO.
- Leave small gaps. Don’t try to shove the tiles together. The grout (or glue) needs room to breathe, and the gaps give it that authentic mosaic look.
Once it’s dry, it feels so heavy and luxurious in your hands. Plus, the way light bounces off it in the afternoon? Chef’s kiss. :*
3. Embellished Denim Jacket
We all have that one old denim jacket in the back of the closet. You know the one—the sleeves are a little frayed, but it fits like a glove. Instead of tossing it, let’s turn it into a statement piece.
Shoulder to Shoulder
The easiest way to get a high-impact look without looking like a kid’s craft project exploded is to concentrate the bling on the shoulders and collar.
- Crystal Mesh: You can buy pre-made crystal mesh strips. These are a lifesaver if you want a uniform, professional look. Just cut and sew or glue!
- Mix and Match: Combine pearls with rhinestones for a “tough but chic” vibe.
- Heat Setting: If you’re using hotfix crystals, you need a heat press or a really steady hand with a household iron. Honestly? Just use fabric glue. It’s less scary and you won’t accidentally scorch your favorite jacket.
I did this to an old Levi’s jacket two years ago, and I still get stopped on the street by people asking where I bought it. The look on their faces when I say “My dining room table” is priceless.
4. Glitter Wine Glasses
Hosting a Galentine’s Day party or just a fancy dinner? Plain glassware is boring. Glitter wine glasses are where it’s at. But we’re not just rolling the rim in glue and glitter like we did in middle school, okay? We’re adults now. We have standards.
The “Stem” Method
For a classier look, focus on the stem and the base.
- Tape off the cup part. Use painter’s tape to ensure absolutely no glitter touches where your mouth goes. Safety first!
- Mod Podge is your bestie. Apply a thin layer to the stem.
- Fine Glitter Only. Use extra fine glitter. Chalk glitter or coarse glitter will look gritty and scratchy. You want it to look like it’s dusted with sugar.
Once it’s dry, seal it with a spray sealant so the glitter doesn’t flake off onto your guests’ laps. That’s a party foul waiting to happen.
5. Resin Geode Coasters
Resin art has taken over the crafting world, and for good reason. It looks expensive, but it’s actually just chemistry and a little bit of patience. Geode coasters are the perfect starter project.
The Geode Shape
You don’t need to be an artist to make these. The beauty of a geode is that it’s supposed to look irregular and natural.
- Use a silicone mold. It pops right out, no fighting required.
- Lay down your crystals first. Put the chunky gems and gold flakes in the mold before you pour the resin.
- Layer your colors. Pour a little white, then a little blue, then swirl with a toothpick. Don’t overmix, or you’ll get mud.
The Bling Factor
After the resin cures, you can add a ring of rhinestones around the outer edge of the coaster. It frames the “rock” and adds that extra pop. Just make sure the resin is fully hard first, or you’ll leave fingerprints in it.
6. Rhinestone Initial Wall Art
Monograms are timeless. But a plain wooden letter from the craft store? Snooze fest. Let’s fix that.
Wrapping Techniques
For letters, the goal is to cover the surface completely. You want it to look like a solid block of light.
- Stones or Rhinestone Wheels? You can buy sheets of rhinestones stuck together in “string” form. These are amazing for straight lines and edges.
- Fill the Gaps: For the flat surfaces, you’ll need to place individual stones. Start at the outside edges and work your way in.
Patience is a Virtue
This project tests your patience. It’s a lot of repetition. Put on a good podcast or binge a show while you do this. The end result—a massive, sparkly initial hanging on your wall—is worth the hours. It makes a killer statement in a bedroom or home office.
7. Blinged-Out Hair Clips
Remember the butterfly clip trend? It’s back, baby. But we’re elevating it. Snag some plain metal or plastic snap clips from the craft store and go to town.
Size Matters
Tiny clips need tiny gems. Don’t try to put a giant cabochon on a tiny alligator clip; it’ll just flop over in your hair.
- Metal clips are better. They hold the glue better than plastic.
- Jewelry glue works best. It has a fine tip for precision.
- Symmetry vs. Abstract: You can either create a pattern (like a flower) or just scatter them randomly. Random is easier and looks just as good.
These make fantastic stocking stuffers or gifts for friends with little kids. Honestly, I wear them myself, and I get a surprising amount of joy out of seeing a flash of sparkle when I tuck my hair behind my ear.
8. Sparkly Candle Holders
This is the easiest project on the list, which is why I saved it for last. It’s instant gratification, and we all need that sometimes.
The “Watercolor” Glitter Effect
Instead of gluing rhinestones onto a glass cylinder, we’re going to glue glitter inside it. This looks WAY more sophisticated because the glass protects the glitter and makes it look smooth.
- Clean the glass. It has to be spotless.
- Apply Mod Podge inside. Using a foam brush, paint a layer of Mod Podge onto the inside wall of the glass.
- Dump in glitter. Swirl it around to coat the glue. Shake out the excess.
- Seal it (optional). A light spray of sealant inside can help, but usually, the glue is enough since it’s not being handled.
Pop a pillar candle inside (LED is safer so the glass doesn’t get too hot), and you have a centerpiece that looks like it costs $50 from a boutique. It probably cost you $5. You’re welcome.
So, there you have it! Eight ways to inject a little sparkle into your daily life without breaking the bank. I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling the urge to glue some gems to something right this second.
Have you tried any of these before, or do you have a bling craft idea that I missed? I’m always looking for my next fix of glitter, so drop your thoughts in the comments. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a date with a glue gun and a very plain-looking lamp base that’s about to get a major upgrade. Happy crafting, you sparkly human!
