So, you’ve decided to throw a Star Wars party. You’re either a superfan looking for any excuse to wear your Jedi robes, or your kid has convinced you that a galaxy-themed birthday is the only path to cool-parent status. Either way, you’ve landed in the right place.

I’ve been down this rabbit hole myself—more times than I care to admit. After one particularly ambitious attempt that involved a lot of cardboard, a glue gun, and a few choice words, I learned a thing or two. The key isn’t spending a fortune on official merchandise. It’s about grabbing some basic supplies and letting the Force (and your creativity) guide you.

Here are 8 DIY Star Wars party decorations that are easy to make, easy on the wallet, and guaranteed to give your party that authentic galaxy far, far away vibe.

1. The “These Aren’t the Droids” Beverage Station

You can’t have a party without drinks, but you can have a party without boring plastic cups sitting on a table. Let’s fix that by turning your beverage station into something that would make the Empire jealous.

Turning Coolers into Starships

Grab your drink cooler—the big orange one you use for camping. Ever wondered why it looks so… industrial? That’s your secret weapon. It’s already the perfect shape and color for an Astromech Droid.

  • Paint the Body: Use silver appliance paint for an R2-D2 look, or go for a blue and white pattern. I’m lazy, so I just bought some silver adhesive vinyl and wrapped the whole thing. It’s way less messy than spray paint.
  • Add the Details: Cut circles from black and white cardstock for R2’s “eyes” and dome details. Use a permanent marker to draw on the panels and random sci-fi greebles.
  • The Dome: If you have an old salad bowl or a plastic dome-shaped container, paint it silver and glue it to the lid. This transforms your boring cooler into a functional, adorable droid.

Simple “Blue Milk” Labels

What’s a Tatooine party without blue milk? Don’t actually serve milk with blue food coloring (unless you want a bathroom situation on your hands). This is just for show.

  • Fill a large glass dispenser with a blue sports drink or lemonade with blue dye.
  • Print out a simple label that says “BLUE MILK (Tatooine Style)” and tape it to the dispenser.
  • For an extra touch, I put a small toy Tauntaun next to it. My guests got a kick out of it. 😛

2. Hyperspace Streamer Curtains

Doorways are boring. They just sit there, being all portal-like. Let’s change that. You want your guests to feel like they’re walking through a jump to lightspeed every time they go to the bathroom.

You’ll need a bunch of blue, black, and white streamers. The cheap crepe paper kind works best.

  1. Create the Base: Tape a length of black streamer across the top of the doorway.
  2. Cut the Strips: Cut long strips of blue and white streamers. Make them different lengths—this is key.
  3. Layer for Effect: Tape the blue and white strips over the black base, letting them hang down. The varying lengths create that “streaking star” look. I usually double or triple up the blue ones in the center to simulate the core of the tunnel.
  4. Pro Tip: If you have a fan nearby, aim it gently at the doorway. The moving streamers really sell the effect.

3. DIY Ewok Village Table Decor

Let’s be honest, the Ewoks are the true heroes of the original trilogy. They took down a Walker with logs and rocks. They deserve a spot at your party table. This is probably the easiest decoration on the list, and it looks adorable.

Supply List

  • Small brown paper gift bags (lunch bag size)
  • Brown and green paint or markers
  • Googly eyes
  • Miniature twigs from your backyard

Here’s the process:

  • Paint the Bags: Crumple the bag a little to soften it, then paint it a medium brown. You want it to look like a log cabin, not a uniform paper bag.
  • Create the Faces: Glue on googly eyes near the top of the bag. Draw a little snout and mouth with a black marker.
  • Add the Ewok Village Feel: Glue small twigs around the opening of the bag (the “roof”) to look like they’re building a structure. You can even draw little windows and doors.
  • The Final Touch: Place a battery-operated tea light inside each bag. It creates a warm, “Endor glow” that is just chef’s kiss. IMO, this is the one decoration you absolutely cannot skip.

4. “Hoth” Ice Cubes and Bowls

This one requires a freezer and a bit of foresight, but the payoff is huge. It’s perfect for a summer party where you want to beat the heat like a Wampa in a cave.

The “Wampa Ice Hand”

This is a classic, and it’s ridiculously simple.

  • Buy a cheap latex glove at a drugstore.
  • Fill it with water, tie the end, and freeze it.
  • Once frozen solid, carefully peel off the latex glove.

You now have a creepy, disembodied ice hand to drop into the punch bowl. As it melts, it slowly reveals itself, which is both cool and slightly terrifying. I warned you there would be sarcasm—this is where it pays off. “Who wants a drink from the Wampa bowl?!”

Snowy Hoth Centerpieces

  • Find a few small rocks or smooth stones from outside. Wash them off.
  • Spray them with white spray paint or coat them heavily with white school glue and sprinkle with glitter or baking soda for texture.
  • Arrange them on the table with some white streamers or cotton batting for snow. Add a tiny Rebel or Imperial figurine for scale.

5. Trash Compactor Photo Backdrop

Remember that scene? The one with the stench, the monster, and the trash? It’s iconic, and it makes for a hilarious photo op.

Finding the Wall

You need a large piece of cardboard. I’m talking refrigerator-box large.

  • Mark the Panels: Use a ruler and a black marker to draw large rectangular panels across the cardboard, simulating the walls of the Death Star trash compactor.
  • Add the Details: Draw bolts, rivets, and pipes. Go wild with it. The more random machinery-looking doodles, the better.
  • The Monster: You need the dianoga. This is easier than you think.
    • Take a gray or green pool noodle.
    • Cut it in half.
    • Attach a few red pipe cleaners or a red plastic cup to one end for the single eye.
    • Tape this tentacle to the side of the cardboard so it hangs down into the frame, ready to snatch your guests.

Stand in front, make a scared face, and snap a pic. It’s guaranteed to be the party’s best Facebook post.

6. Asteroid Field Ceiling Hangings

Look up. The ceiling is empty. It’s a vast, empty space just begging for an asteroid field. Don’t tell me about the odds.

Crushed Paper Balls

This is the core of the project. Take sheets of old newspaper or brown packing paper.

  1. Crumple each sheet into a tight ball.
  2. For larger asteroids, use two crumpled sheets taped together.
  3. For a more “rock-like” appearance, you can paint them gray or brown with a little bit of spray paint. I usually skip this step and leave them brown—it’s faster and honestly looks pretty good.

Hanging and Lighting

  • Thread them up: Use fishing line (it’s invisible!) and a needle to string through the paper balls. Tie a knot at the bottom of each asteroid to keep it in place.
  • Vary the heights: Tie the other ends to the ceiling at different lengths. You want a cluster of asteroids, not a straight line.
  • Lighting is Key: Shine a couple of inexpensive spotlights or clip-on lights up at the ceiling from the floor. The shadows cast by the crumpled paper on the ceiling and walls are what really sell the illusion.

7. Hologram Message Centerpieces

“Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” You can recreate that iconic blue shimmer with just a few craft supplies.

The Princess Projector

You’ll need small, flat-rate shipping boxes (the small ones from the post office work great) or any small box you have lying around.

  • Paint it Grey: Paint the box grey or silver to look like a R2-D2 projector.
  • Make the Screen: Cut a rectangular hole in the top of the box.
  • The Hologram Effect:
    • Find a small, clear plastic cup or container. A solo cup works, but a square or cylindrical one is better.
    • Print out a small picture of Princess Leia or any Star Wars character. I once used a picture of my cat with a Leia wig, and it was hilarious.
    • Place the picture inside the box, under the hole.
    • Place the clear plastic cup upside down over the hole.
    • Put a blue LED light inside the box, next to the picture. The blue light shining up through the picture and into the cup creates a convincing hologram effect.

8. Yoda “Judge Me By My Size, Do You?” Cake Stand

Every party needs a cake, and every cake needs a stand. Let’s make one that’s strong with the Force.

Assembling the Swamp

You need a few small, shallow terra-cotta pots (the 2-inch ones), a larger round platter or a large pot base, and a small Yoda figurine.

  • The Base: The large platter is your Dagobah swamp floor.
  • The Risers: Glue the small terra-cotta pots upside down onto the platter in a cluster. This creates different levels for your cake to sit on.
  • The Cake Platform: Find a flat, round piece of wood or plastic (or even another upside-down, larger pot) and glue it on top of the small pots. This is where your cake will actually sit.
  • The Greenery: Glue on some fake moss or dried herbs around the base and the pots.
  • The Jedi Master: Place your Yoda figurine off to the side, maybe with a tiny cup of soup (just kidding… mostly). I like to put him near the base, looking up at the cake as if he’s judging its size.

Place your cake on top. Every time you cut a slice, you can imagine Yoda is teaching you about the fleeting nature of material possessions. Deep, right?

And there you have it. Eight DIY decorations that will take your party from a simple gathering in a forest moon to a full-blown celebration in the galactic capital. None of these projects require the precision of a Mandalorian armorer, just a little bit of time and a willingness to have fun with it.

May the Force be with you, and more importantly, may your glue gun stay hot and your streamers stay untangled. Now go throw that party!
